Our range is made up of two levels, Spartan and Heavy Duty, and they are both very popular for their own applications.

So, the Spartan range is essentially a value for money range. While the Spartan pallets are certified and provide the assurance of safety, they are really an entry level range. They are racking compatible, hot-dip galvanised, have lashing points and most of them come with the heavy-duty mesh top. This means that you can put rubber on and use the lashing points to secure heavy components. The tonnage options, however, are lower than the Heavy Duty range. The Spartan range offers a 1 tonne, 2 tonne, and 3 tonne option.

One of the biggest differences with the Spartan range is the fact that it isn’t compatible with the DAYWALK accessories. So, the bolts, the legs, the chocks, and the spreader plates that we offer are not designed to work with the Spartan pallets. However, the mesh is still certified for bolt through, meaning you can use your own accessories.

So, if we were to change over and look at the Heavy Duty range, it is really the whole Lego or Meccano system where you still have the heavy-duty mesh, safety assurance, hot-dip galvanisation and lashing points, however, the pallets are designed to fit with the DAYWALK accessory range. So, the bolts, spreader plates, adjustable legs, chocks and rubber can all be used to secure the component to the pallet, making the process simpler.

From a durability perspective, the Heavy Duty range is also superior. It offers pallets ranging from a 1 tonne capacity, right up to 12 tonnes. So, the Heavy Duty range gives you maximum flexibility because it is not only compatible with accessories, but has the ability to safely transport a wider range of components.

So, if you are looking for ultimate ease, flexibility, and durability, the Heavy Duty range is the best option, but if you are running on a tighter budget, and just starting the on journey of certified transport frames, the Spartan range is probably best for you. Whatever the application, both options make transport safety for components much easier than having to design, certify and manufacture your own solutions.

Steel Pallets: Ranked by durability and price.

One of the hot topics in the world of handling and storage, and more specifically heavy component handling and storage, is the timber ban. So, let’s unpack it a little further. The ban is specifically around native logging, and native Australian hardwoods that have been logged, processed, and used for many years. Certain states, such as WA, have perceived this as an environmental threat, and have put a ban in place to protect around 2 million hectares of forest. In simple words, native trees can no longer be commercially harvested. This has had an impact on many industries, and has left many people wondering, what now? What do we use now that hardwood pallets are no longer an option?

This ban is hard, and a lot of changes have to be made, but if you drill down into it, it could be a blessing in disguise. Obviously, there is still the option of softwood, such as pine pallets. However, many heavy industrial companies, and DAYWALK, prefer something more reliable, such as hardwood, to be used. There are good reasons for this. Pine pallets, while their types may vary, are typically low in strength and reliability, meaning they are a dangerous option for heavy equipment and components.

Whether we are using hardwood or pine, the risk still remains particularly dynamic. These pallets are generally just nailed together, and the boards making them up can come loose. This means that in an emergency breaking situation, these pallets can break apart, strapping can come loose, and the product can become a deadly projectile off the back of a truck. The result? Human lives are on the line. So, what other options are there, if pine pallets are dangerous, and hardwood pallets, though stronger, aren’t perfectly safe, and are banned anyway.

DAYWALK has been working with industry professionals and government departments on this exact matter. And the option that is staring us in the face, is non-timber pallets. Non-timber pallets, while they are not as cheap as timber, have progressed to being something that is commercially viable, and a much better option from an environmental and safety perspective.

Steel pallets are reusable, but in addition to this, they are significantly safer. They exceed any indicative transport and storage ratings that are placed on timber pallets, and are engineered and manufactured to last and to keep components safely restrained on the road.

So, while the timber ban is difficult to navigate, and changes have to be made, it may be a turning point for transport and storage safety. The question often comes up as to the cost of compliance versus non-compliance. So, why should you invest in a compliant system rather than just going for a non-compliant and probably cheaper option. The answer is to save lives and to have the assurance that you have done everything in your power to prevent a fatal accident from occurring.

In a non-compliant frame, there is no assurance. You might be the owner of a logistics company or a vendor company, and there is no assurance when you put your head on your pillow that night that your driver and component are going to have a safe trip. How are you sure that that component is going to arrive at destination safely and in one piece, and that it hasn’t come sliding off the back of the truck?

So, the cost of compliance is a small price to pay if you're comparing it with the price of a life, because life is precious. You cannot put a value on the price of a life, or multiple lives lost, as a result of something coming off the back of a truck in an emergency breaking event.

You might say, well, I’ll just get something knocked up at a local fab shop and is DAYWALK saying that that can't be done, or is the law saying that that can't be done? The law does not say it is mandatory that you have a certified frame, but as one eminent gentleman in the industry said, ‘How do you prove when you are in court that that frame was indeed compliant? What is there to prove, is there the paperwork or a certification to prove that the frame that we transported a multi-tonne component on was indeed compliant?’

There might be a few more dollars saved in a non-engineered, non-certified, non-transport rated frame, compared to a frame where there's been full design engineering, finite element analysis and third-party verification on the whole design, but the risk is not worth taking.

So, all in all the price or investment of proactive compliance is a very worthwhile investment compared to something where you can't be sure, because you can't be assured of safety and compliance when something has just been knocked up and not properly certified.
