CHALLENGE

Keep rail operations moving

A mega miner was reliant on a rail bogie for the transport of materials across sites in outback Australia. However, challenges arose with the lack of suitable storage, manual handling issues and component transport of this valuable asset.
CUSTOM BOGIE FRAME, COVER & PRESERVATION

The rail bogie is a massive component that required a smarter storage and handling solution to minimise inefficiencies and handling risks. Concerns included difficulty with handling and transport, which created manual handling issues. It was also left unprotected and unsupported outdoors. So much so that the equipment was covered with vines and weeds, as it was placed straight onto the dirt. As an expensive and vital piece of equipment, the rail bogie required a custom solution to address these pain points.

After evaluating the scope, a detailed proposal was developed that included the following frame and accessories:

MAINTAINING MOTION WITH MINING RAILWAYS

Customised Transport Frame

Three specialised custom frames designed for 17.5T bogies, featuring fixed wheel supports lined with load restraint rubber and certified vehicle restraint points for secure lashing. The frame included forklift pockets for tare lift handling and crane handling specifications for safe transport.

Heavy-Duty Covers

Three clamshell covers made from 900gsm material for full encapsulation and protection. These covers featured heavy-duty zips, weather flaps, and multiple access points for ease of use. Internal load restraint rubber was included to secure the bogies within the covers, ensuring additional protection during transportation.

Preservation and Guidance Tools

eVCIs and desiccants were integrated into the cover for moisture control. QR codes were attached to the transport frame and covers, linking to user guides, outdoor preservation guidelines, and truck lashing/crane lifting instructions.

Daywalk 17.5T Customised Bogie Frames were developed to cradle and protect these key components.

Rail bogie and PVC cover

Transport and preservation engineered in Australia for asset protection in harsh environments.

PRESERVATION OF ASSET

Because the rail bogie was left exposed in a harsh, hot climate, there was also the risk of rust causing damage to the equipment. Plastic wrap can falter in humid conditions, with tears or holes in the plastic allowing moisture to settle within the wrap. This can escalate rusting with metal. Alternatively, no cover for the rail bogie left the equipment susceptible to rust, as well as being covered by vines, dust, dirt and debris.

COST-DRIVEN SOLUTION

These spares are a serious investment, with estimated costs:

Value of rail bogies                    Ranging from $75,000 – $180,000+

Cost of repairs                             Light overhaul >$30,000, Rework >$100,000

Cost of delays                             >$10,000s per day

Other considerations               Risk of manual handling accidents, OH&S incidents

DAYWALK’s engineering team were engaged to develop a suitable frame solution, to mitigate the cost of reworking and delays in handling and transport of the bogie.

This solution provided:

  • Storage and transport – As a complete solution, the rail bogie could be easily moved when required.
  • Ease of handing – With its tailored design, the transport certified frame provided optimum support and protection for the rail bogie, which could be left idle in outdoor conditions for months or years at a time.
  • PVC Cover – Preventing rust and providing protection for the spare, the custom cover offers long-term protection for outdoor environments.
